As municipalities and building owners push towards a stronger certification for their buildings and a mandatory zero net energy in their properties, they are looking towards renewable energy sources for buildings. Renewable energy sources: Among these technologies Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), the market is the most dynamic and proven for built-up spaces, and stand as a different technology than others mentioned previously.
Overcoming Urban Space Constraints with Compact Design
One of the largest problems that the commercial areas experience is space. There is a lot of land space that's being used by HVACs on rooftops, and it doesn't make much sense to use land on the ground for wind farms. The vertical wind turbines are the most suitable in this instance. They are small, tall, can be attached to a building or placed on a roof, and can fit into a building and be used for other purposes.
A VAWT is designed to operate in relatively compact areas as compared to the horizontal axis turbines which necessitate an open space and a tall tower. Research work carried out on the VAWT designs inspired by nature has shown that the compactness of trees allows them to be installed in an already established built environment such as commercial or residential property to work synergistically and enhance aesthetics. Some are able to be constructed in an area of approximately 24 sq. ft. making them suitable for high population density areas.
Harnessing Unpredictable Winds for On-Site Generation
In commercial areas, the complex wind patterns occurring around tall buildings are a well-known phenomenon. The wind direction is constantly changing, which makes it difficult for the conventional wind turbines to harvest energy from the wind; they need to continually yaw to follow the wind. Vertical wind turbines, however, are omni-directional that is, they can catch the wind with any direction without spinning.
The design makes them very effective in turbulent urban environments with wind flow that can be multidirectional and variable. The Wind Tree Mill type biomimetic VAWT system was successfully tested and verified that it has stable self-starting performance and sustained wind powering ability when the wind blows from multiple directions in average urban wind speed of 2m/s. This power generation capacity by the turbulent wind is a more constant on-site energy supply than solar panels can offer, which are restricted by the day and the weather.
Good Neighbors: Low Noise and Low Vibration
Any place with noise and disruption cannot be a business. Rejection of the conventional wind turbines in the commercial market is attributed to the sound of the wind blowing across the blades of the wind turbines. The vertical axis design is unique and much quieter and less vibrating than blade noise and vibration.
The low acoustic signature makes VAWTs perfect neighbours to offices, retail and residential properties in commercial areas. Another benefit of the VAWT is that it doesn't emit the same kind of noise pollution as conventional windmills and it is even quieter. They are also not endangered by local animals in some designs, birds have been sighted nesting in the device demonstrating no danger and co-existence.
Tangible Economic and Environmental Benefits
Buildings lower electricity expenses, because it is an alternative to buying electricity from the grid. In a vertical-axis micro wind turbine study for commercial buildings, the energy saved by MWT ranged from 0.01 to 37.51% of electricity consumption, CO₂ emission saved 0.01 to 37.74% and saved on operating costs to a certain extent. These directly contribute to the corporate sustainability objectives. The calculation conducted for a 5kW VAWT showed almost 950 kg of CO₂ emissions saved per year per kW. Introducing these systems will enable commercial districts to reduce their carbon footprint, improve their brand and get involved in the global shift towards the low carbon economy.
